UK. The Affordable Future Fleet at the heart of INEC 2010

UK. The Affordable Future Fleet at the heart of INEC 2010

Every two years for the past 20 years commercial and military ship operators, designers and shipbuilders, classification societies, machinery and equipment manufacturers, universities and similarly relevant organisations have gathered for the International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC). This years three-day conference, the tenth in the series, will be principally sponsored by BAE Systems and held Tuesday 11-Thursday 13 May in the historic Rope Store at HM Naval Base, Portsmouth. Its theme is The Affordable Future Fleet. Naval forces globally are facing increasing demands for their services worldwide for anti-narcotic operations, anti-piracy operations, escort duties, or operations in areas of conflict all set against ever more stringent financial constraints. Affordability is not a new issue, explains Captain John Newell MBE, Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence and Chairman of the INEC Advisory Committee. There has been pressure on Defence budgets for many years, but never more so than at present, with Governments facing reduced tax receipts as a result of the worldwide economic downturn, inflation in the Defence sector outpacing the generally accepted national averages, and an ever-increasing role for maritime forces on an unstable geopolitical stage. The theme of INEC 2010, The Affordable Future Fleet, was established around 18 months ago, when affordability of the equipment programme for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence was already under close scrutiny. Since then, both main political parties have stated that they would hold a Strategic Defence Review following the General Election to be held later this year (quite possibly, the week prior to INEC 2010). The challenges that we currently face in the Royal Navy are only likely to be more difficult following this review. The aim of the conference is to address and debate what might make up an affordable future fleet; both for the Royal Navy and for all other international naval forces, he explains. Should the fleet be high-end warfighting centric, or comprise a larger number of smaller vessels for anti-piracy, anti-narcotics, etc? Or, more likely, somewhere in between? Our Call for Papers attracted well over a hundred submissions - more than ever before, providing the advisory committee with some tough decisions, explains Captain Newell. They were spoilt for choice. Authors have risen to the occasion and we are pleased by the level of response and the highly relevant papers that will be given in Portsmouth. The conference gets down to business Following introductory remarks and a welcome to the Portsmouth Naval Base by both Captain John Newell and Commodore Rob Thompson Royal Navy, Naval Base Commander, Portsmouth Naval Base, the conference opens with two highly significant keynote addresses - including one from Alan Johnston CBE, Managing Director, BAE Systems Surface Ships, before looking at aspects of affordability by means of presentations by members of the UKs Ministry of Defence. Captain P Methven Royal Navy and Captain P J Titterton OBE Royal Navy look at The affordable future fleet - understanding affordability from a central policy and programming perspective and Commander A Gregory Royal Navy will look at Affordable future maritime surface platforms - a capability sponsors perspective. The conference spotlight then falls on presentations on FSC concept phase - bounding the requirement given by R Lamerton, Naval Design Partnering (NDP), Thales Naval Ltd, A Cudmore, NDP, Ministry of Defence and I Leech, NDP, BAE Systems Surface Ships; and Collaboration with the past by K J Verrinder, M Robinson and T Martin of the US Navy. These scene setting presentations are then followed by parallel sessions on Design, with speakers from The Netherlands, UK and the USA; and Affordability through the eyes of experts in the field from Germany, The Netherlands, UK and the USA. The conference reception then takes place on HMS Warrior, Britains first iron-hulled, armoured warship. Packed second day Design features again on Day 2 when presentations by authors from New Zealand and the UK run in parallel with the Maintenance and support session with its speakers from The Netherlands, UK and USA. In the afternoon the two parallel sessions look at Submarines and the highly topical subject of Environment, again with speakers from home and overseas. In all, INEC 2010 features some 20 papers, presentations and poster presentations from overseas amongst the total of over 65. The full programme is on the IMarEST website at www.imarest.org The conference reception and dinner take place at the end of Day 2 in the beautifully restored Boathouse No 7, which was once used for building smaller craft of the Royal Navy, with Stephen Prince, Naval Historical Branch as the after dinner speaker. The third, and final day is another packed one, with Electric propulsion and auxiliaries and Innovation running in parallel with each other in the morning and attracting speakers from suppliers as well as from ministries of defence and linked organisations from the UK, USA, The Netherlands and Korea. Final day The three active days are completed by a plenary session chaired by Tim Hardy, BMT Defence Services Ltd, UK. During this closing session with its theme Manning and training, presentations will be given on Future training for a future fleet Lieutenant Commander J M M Proffitt, Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence; Towards the unmanned warship by Rear Admiral R M Lutje-Schipholt RNLN and Vice Admiral Sir Robert Hill KBE FREng; and It is people, not ships, aircraft or engines that win wars yet people are the highest Through Life Cost of warships. How can this apparent dilemma be resolved? by Commander J E Voyce, Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence. All are destined to stimulate much discussion. Sir Donald Gosling Award The plenary session ends with a closing summary and the presentation of the Sir Donald Gosling Awards. We are extremely gratified that the Sir Donald Gosling Award will once again be a feature of INEC, says Dr Marcus Jones, Chief Executive of IMarEST. This is open to authors aged 40 or under at the time of the conference, who will then be eligible for one of three prizes (first prize 5000; second prize 2500; and third prize 1500). As we found in 2008 when the new award was generously established in close cooperation with Sir Donald, it encouraged involvement and attendance from younger participants from the military, industry and academia with our winners coming from The Netherlands, Canada and Germany. We look forward to hearing the presentations during the course of INEC 2010, and are grateful to Sir Donald for his continuing and generous support of INEC. The Awards are judged on both the quality of the paper and on its presentation. An industrial visit of HM Naval Base takes place on Friday 14 May hosted by BAE Systems Surface Ships. A supporting exhibition is being held in conjunction with the conference at which companies will exhibit their latest products and services. Further information on all aspects of INEC 2010 is available from Christine Martin at christine.martin@imarest.org and from the IMarEST Events Department at IMarEST, 80 Coleman Street, London EC2R 5BJ, UK. AC Match Race Championship : Top teams tangle in Cascais

Emirates Team New Zealand is setting a torrid pace at the Cascais AC Match Race Championship, the third stage of the Americas Cup World Series, leading after the first day of the series. Following a two-hour postponement due to unusually light and fickle winds in Cascais, the three seeding fleet races were packed with thrills and spills, the most dramatic of which was a start line collision between ORACLE Racing Coutts and the Kiwis. The day would culminate with a one-on-one duel between the Emirates team and the American defender, ORACLE Racing Spithill the first match race of the Americas Cup World Series. At stake was top spot on the day, and the race didnt disappoint with the lead passing back and forth until late in the match. Barker, the Kiwi skipper, stormed away off the starting line to lead at the first mark, only to see the American team find a shift on the opposite side of the race course. By the bottom gate, ETNZ was in the lead again. But approaching the halfway point of the race, there was an important cross between the two boats, which resulted in a classic match racing set piece, giving the advantage back to Spithill. The ping-pong battle continued on the second lap of the course until Emirates Team New Zealand was able to hook into a favorable wind shift and finally shake the ORACLE Racing boat for good. The Kiwis would end the afternoon with top points on the day, with Spithill settling for second place. The guys on board are doing a fantastic job on crewing, Barker said. Yes, you make mistakes and its frustrating that you make them And not that you are afraid, but these boats are very, very, hard on the crew. But there is an improvement since Auckland, we are getting more comfortable in the multihull environment which is an improvement. The three seeding fleet races were no less exciting than the final match. Team Korea continues to impress, finishing the day ranked third, while Frances Energy Team is fourth. The best bit of the day was our first race where we had two penalties on the first downwind and sailed a really good second downwind to get back into the race, said Chris Draper the Korean skipper. While the other races were really good, that was probably the highlight of the day. The big collision between Coutts and Barker came in the pre-start of the second race, when Cup-legend Coutts tried to box the Emirates team out of the start line. But his move was too aggressive and resulted in a collision and a penalty to the ORACLE Racing squad: It put a lot of pressure on the skin Well have to repair it tonight and be ready for tomorrow, Barker said. New Zealand & France: Jean-Pierre Dick introduces the JP54 revolution

The French sailor, Jean-Pierre Dick, has imagined a top-of-the-range fast cruising yacht whose design is unique. Designed by Guillaume Verdier* and the interior designed by Stphanie Marin, the first JP54 has just been launched in Auckland, New Zealand. Produced in a limited series by Absolute Dreamer, the JP54 takes its inspiration from the performances of racing boats to discover new horizons. The JP54 will be in France this summer. Jean-Pierre Dick: I imagined the cruising yacht of my dreams during my last two Vende Globe races. I wanted to sail offshore and at the same time enjoy stopovers. I therefore conceived the JP54, a uniquely designed light and fast yacht, to retain the pleasure of surfing at 20 knots more comfortably than on my racing yacht. With the JP54, you can share the sensations and the pleasures of sailing with your family and friends. The satellite, a revolution inside In order to optimize the performance of the JP54 and to create a new indoor living space, the boat has a satellite; a rotating carousel. This innovative concept was developed on board Paprec-Virbac 2**. The satellite is a galley-chart table unit into which all the systems such as the batteries, hydraulics and storage are fitted. The loaded weight (600 kg) can be transferred windward in a few seconds just by pressing a button. It is the first time that a similar concept has been put into use on a cruising yacht. The gain is important both in terms of performance and comfort on board. The sailors are always windward when at the chart table or cooking, while the guests enjoy a large space leeward. A unique interior design by Stphanie Marin This distribution of the interior space takes on a new approach: priority is given to space. The carousel redefines the space and changes the interior on each change of tack. The impression of space is reinforced by forward cabins opening onto the saloon-carousel and by the unique and incredibly spacious shower and toilet. You can sail with a limited crew or with the family on the JP54, in a comfortable, spacious and luminous space, thanks to the large seats positioned all along the hull. The two aft cabins are equipped with a huge bed where you can lie down and listen to music thanks to the integrated music system. A large number of storage spaces are provided under the rounded seating. Manoeuvring simplicity on board the JP54 Jean-Pierre Dick: Through the experience of single-handed sailing, I have been able to design a boat that is really simple to use. The hydraulic winches remove the physical side to manoeuvring. In 10 minutes, all the sails are hoisted! The cockpit is uncluttered making movement easy on deck and allowing you to enjoy the sunbaths comfortably. The whole of the pit is brought back to starboard on an electric winch. There is no mainsheet rail. The JP54 can easily be manoeuvred double-handed in all circumstances. Welcome aboard * Guillaume is the young and talented French architect who designed Jean-Pierres new racing yacht for the Vende Globe 2012, Virbac-Paprec 3. ** Paprec-Virbac 2. Transat B to B : J- 4 Saint-Barth en plein boom

New Zealand. 100% Marine Ltd celebrates its first year in business

New Zealand. 100% Marine Ltd celebrates its first year in business

100% Marine celebrate their first year in business by winning two more distributorships and appointing a new member of the team. The Auckland-based company was set up by Kiwi, Ben Rennell, who decided to return home late last year. Ben was based in the UK and worked as a Global Sales Manager for AIM listed SRT Marine, a specialist marine technology company, for five years. He has worked with high level government officials and top corporate management the world over, signing multimillion dollar, high tech deals with leading marine electronics companies across the globe. I love this industry, but felt home calling so decided to use my knowledge and contacts to bring modern retailing and marketing to the marine electronics niche in New Zealand and so far its been extremely well received by New Zealand boaties, said Ben Rennell. With many young, skilled people heading overseas, 32-year-old Ben decided to break the trend and set sail for home to start up business in his native Auckland competing against the bigger, more established companies. 100% Marine has only been on the radar for the last 12 months, but in that time theyve won some key distributorships and are now the exclusive distributor for Echopilot. They have also picked up contracts as distributors for Digital Yacht and NASA Marine and are official agents for Pacific Aerials, McMurdo emergency beacons and Auto Anchor automatic anchoring systems, among others. Kay Madigan from Auto Anchor said: 100% Marine has such a fresh approach. They are proactive, understand the market and customers very well and are clearly very driven. Were looking forward to doing business with them. Im so pleased to be working directly with brands like Echopilot, NASA, McMurdo and Auto Anchor and am confident it will be the start of long and strong relationships. Winning the Echopilot contract was a particular coup for us, said Ben. A spokesman for Echopilot said: We are really delighted to be working with an enthusiastic young company like 100% Marine. The combination of Bens passion and knowledge made it a very easy decision. Together we will bring the benefits of forward looking sonar to the yachtsmen in New Zealand and the Pacific. While other companies are feeling the pinch of the recession 100% Marine has managed to grow. They might be a little fish in a big pond, but what makes them stand out from the crowd is that they are the only marine electronics company in New Zealand to offer such an extensive array of brands including Digital Yacht, Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, Lowrance, Simrad, Eagle, Humminbird, Nasa Marine, ICOM and many more. Other dealers are quite segregated by brand and the distributors they deal with, whereas we stock such a wide range. We have over 3500 products available and every day the list is growing. Couple that with our extensive knowledge and were able to offer truly unbiased advice and great low prices. Ultimately, its our customers who benefit from this, which is why they are choosing us, said Ben. And with the business growing, Ben has appointed Nick Thorpe as Sales Marketing Manager. Nick has a great pedigree. With a mind for marketing and years of practical experience in the yachting industry, he brings with him fresh ideas and a wealth of knowledge. He has spent nine years travelling the world, skippering luxury yachts and project managing super-yacht refits. Its great to be involved in an industry that I am passionate about. Every day offers exciting new challenges, and to be able to join the company early on and help it evolve really does appeal to me, explained Nick. The combination of our skills, expertise and varied backgrounds can only improve the quality of our service and help us to continue to grow, added Ben. Last Updated ( Wednesday, 24 November 2010 )

Millennium Cup Pacific Series: Silvertip wins superyacht regatta in Auckland

The New Zealand-built sailing yacht Silvertip has won the very competitively-sailed Millennium Cup Pacific Series superyacht regatta in Auckland. A small, but spirited fleet sailed four races in three days on three very different courses in Auckland Harbour. Using an IRC handicap system, Silvertip started near or at the rear of the fleet with the smaller yachts starting nearly half an hour in front of her in all four races. The final two races were sailed around a 12-nautical mile triangular course off Aucklands East Coast Bays. In Fitzroy Yachts race three, Silvertip, an Ed Dubois-designed 33.8 metre sloop, proved well suited to the light conditions - 7-8 knots - to easily pass SY Janice of Wyoming, then SY Thalia and SY Naos on a shortened course to be saluted by the committee boats gun on the finish line. The sole division two entry SY Ragtime was again the quickest craft to complete the short course. Built in New Zealand in 1964, the 19.8 metre Ragtime (formerly Infidel) has shown her considerable pace in a range of conditions throughout the regatta. The afternoons Southern Spars race four required two circuits of the triangular course and in 14-15 knots of breeze, the smallest yacht in the fleet, the 32-metre cutter rigged SY Naos started first and finished first much to the delight of all onboard. Janice of Wyoming crossed the line in second place to consolidate second place overall in the regatta while Silvertip finished third with Thalia fourth and Ragtime fifth. Millennium Cup organising committee member Owen Rutter has been part of the crew onboard Silvertip for all four races. The lighter conditions really favoured Silvertip in the morning race, but as the breeze picked up Janice of Wyoming had the advantage over us. Our racing was very close; at times just metres apart, says Rutter. All the competitors have thoroughly enjoyed the racing and, as weve seen with the IRC handicap system ably managed for us by Hal Wagstaff of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, different conditions suit different boats and therefore its great to see Naos and Janice of Wyoming sail so well in this final race of the regatta. Points were awarded on a reverse basis, with one point for a win, two points for second and so on. Silvertip finished on six points, Janice of Wyoming on eight, Naos on 12 and Thalia on 14, making Silvertip the Millennium Cup winner for 2009. Mark Wightman, chairman of NZ Marine which developed and organises the Millennium Cup superyacht regatta, sums up the event as ...fantastic! Weve had excellent, competitive sailing, a very spirited golf game at Gulf Harbour and some fantastic functions each evening. This encompasses everything a Millennium Cup regatta should be - an extremely enjoyable way to celebrate the New Zealand marine industry and our involvement in the international yachting fraternity. We thank all our competitors, all our guests to celebrated the regatta with us at our events and all our sponsors for helping us make the 2009 Millennium Cup Pacific Series a truly great regatta, says Wightman. This Millennium Cup Pacific Series has offered superyacht owners the last chance in what could be a long time to compete for the Millennium Cup in Auckland. Our event is intrinsically linked to the Americas Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup, so all you can say with certainty is that the next Millennium Cup will be sailed overseas and we look forward to welcoming everyone to our next event whenever it may be. The 2009 Millennium Cup Pacific Series has been made possible with the support of Boat International Media, Alloy Yachts, Integrated Marine Group, Southern Spars, Fitzroy Yachts, Robinson Marine Interiors, Events Clothing, Viking Crew Management, Hall Spars, Electronic Navigation, Oceanbridge Shipping, Harken NZ, North Sails, IC Frith Associates, Maxwell Marine, Mulcahy Engineering, Yachting Developments, 26000 Vodka, Lufthansa Private Jet, Lexus, Antipodes Water, Arano Juice and Domo Collections. Giraglia Rolex Cup: How Alegre won by her owner & skipper Andres Soriano

Skipper/owner Andres Soriano has won the Trofeo Rolex and the Trofeo Rn Lavainville as the first yacht overall in elapsed time. Alegre completed the course in 36 hours, 58 minutes, 45 seconds. For Soriano it was a hard-fought victory. Trying to get to the right-hand favored side, Alegre didnt have the best of starts, with Bella Mente covering them. But clear of the bay of St. Tropez, Alegre had a good run down to La Fourmigue in six knots that soon built to 14 knots. After rounding, Alegre took a hard left to the shore, while Bella Mente and Ran held off; Alegres plan to be the most northerly of their group. Soriano said, Over the night we were the left-most boat, and also we wanted to be north of the rhumbline to the rock. Thats where we ended up and we were happy about that. We expected it to be very, very light there and from experience of the high mountains of Corsica on the western side, it closes down. At 30 miles out, Alegre was sailing in 12 knots of breeze from 110 degrees true; there was a massive compression of the boats, and Alegre caught up with the Open 60, Group Bel. Alegre tactician Stuart Childery added, We dont have a code zero (headsail), only an A3 so we cant sail certain angles, we couldnt get as high as the other boats, but we extended to the rock rounding nine minutes ahead of Bella Mente. From there we had a tight cover on Bella Mente, and had an inkling that we wanted to be west of the rhumbline. Soriano said, We rounded the rock nicely, after that it was a battle. We held our distance most of the way until the very end, where the gap closed and the group compressed again. Alegre parked up with the pack with a mile and a half separation. The breeze was shifting, the group saw 290 , then 340 degrees. Here some boats tacked in towards shore and others - Alegre and Bella Mente - stayed off and were into what there was of a breeze, first. For the last miles of sailing Soriano said, Lots of sail changes - quite a few - but more than anything just light-wind sailing, which is really tough. We were fairly strict in the watch system and the three drivers all got a good rest and we were pretty disciplined in trading out. For the last miles, every time Bella Mente tacked, we covered them, so they wouldnt have been happy campers. We must have thrown in 30 tacks in the last four hours.it was painful! Its been a friendly rivalry between Bella Mente and Alegre, both boats of which were built at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, R.I., and were under construction there at the same time. At this seasons Palma Vela regatta, Bella Mente finished ahead of Alegre; at the Trofeo Pirelli Regatta, ALegre was 2nd and Bella Mente 3rd; at the Settimana dei Tre Golfi, Bella Mente prevailed. For Childery, an Etchells World champion, one of the best parts of sailing on Alegre is that the crew has been steadily improving since last season. Im quite pleased with our team, we were just average last year and after each event weve come together; as a team weve really started to gel. As of 0200 Friday, more than half the fleet - 100 yachts - had rounded La Giraglia rock; seven boats have retired. Arrivals are expected throughout the day and tomorrow morning. The time limit for the Giraglia race is Saturday, June 20th at 1pm. Anna Maria Gregorini See Giraglia Rolex Cup images: Last Updated ( Friday, 19 June 2009 )
